Although there is a belief that dark circles are a symptom manifested by tiredness or a lack of sleep, this is not entirely true. There are many other factors that may be contributing to the appearance of dark circles.

Furthermore, there are different types of dark circles, and each one requires a specific and often personalized treatment.

That is why today we want to talk to you about the reasons why hollow dark circles may appear, how to correct dark circles naturally, and also how to prevent them.

What causes dark circles?

Before we begin, it is important to know that dark circles look different depending on skin color: they can be purple, blue, dark brown, or even black.

In some cases, dark circles can be considered small messengers that invite us to change our lifestyle, such as cultivating good sleep hygiene or following a diet rich in quality ingredients with high nutritional value.

The area under the eyes can look darker due to the constriction of blood vessels. This causes hyperpigmentation or thinning of the skin around the eyes.

The most common causes of dark circles are:

  • Lack of sleep or poor sleep habits
  • Allergies
  • Hyperpigmentation, which occurs when the body produces more melanin
  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Overexposure to sunlight
  • Aging
  • Smoking
  • Genetic inheritance
  • Fluid retention
  • Dehydration
  • Dermatitis…

What types of dark circles exist?

types of dark circles

Depending on the cause, a person may suffer from one type of dark circle or another. We can classify them as follows:

  • Transient dark circles: these are usually the most common and are related to lack of sleep, stress, and exhaustion. They appear when you do not get the necessary hours of sleep or are going through a moment of nervousness and high pressure. Their coloration is usually bluish or purplish.
  • Hollow dark circles: characterized by forming a deep, pronounced groove that extends from the tear duct to the cheek. They usually appear due to increased skin sagging caused by aging or sudden weight changes.
  • Dark circles due to sagging: although they are very similar to the previous ones, these usually come accompanied by the well-known crow's feet. They arise due to overexposure to the sun, facial expressions, the passage of time, and skin dehydration.
  • Vascular dark circles: the main cause is the dilation of blood vessels and the thinning of the eyelid skin. They are usually more common in people with fair skin, as the thinness of the tissues makes the circulatory network underneath visible.
  • Pigmented dark circles: these dark circles arise due to an increase in melanin in the skin located around the eye due to genetic causes or hormonal changes. Orange or brown in color, they are more common in dark or tanned skin tones.
  • Allergic dark circles: when an external element triggers an allergic reaction in the eye area, it causes congestion of the blood vessels and, consequently, inflammation and marks under the eyes, resulting in dark circles.
